Why This Approach?
“This is a new way of thinking about how everyone learns and thrives. It really makes sense.”
— A. S. educator
At Creative Lives, we looked outside the box for an approach to education and parenting that would support young people, and the adults who teach and guide them, to thrive.
Every Child Deserves the Opportunity to Thrive
A Practical Framework for Whole-Child Education
We discovered an elegant solution inA Framework for Wise Education®—developed by educator and author Ellen Tadd.
This approach emerged from Tadd's long-standing engagement with developmental theory and her curiosity about what helps people meet challenges with steadiness, continue to grow, and actualize their unique potential.
As she worked with children and adults, Tadd sought to deepen her understanding of human development beyond existing models. In pursuing this, she explored whether the human energy system—often called the chakra system—could offer insight into common human challenges, and the attitudes, behaviors, and environments that shape human potential.
Through decades of sustained observation and work with thousands of individuals, she found that this system provided a practical developmental framework for supporting growth, human potential, and mitigating blocks to learning and fulfillment.
If You Are New to the Chakra System
The term chakra system can raise questions, especially for individuals encountering it for the first time. In Creative Lives' work, chakras are not presented as a belief system or spiritual practice. Rather, we examine their practical function in order to better understand and support optimal learning and well-being. In our experience, this approach can integrate beautifully into supporting existing approaches, including restorative practices, social-emotional learning, multi-tiered support systems, and more.
Some details are helpful. There are seven main chakras, or energy centers, within this system. Each one aligns with a place in the physical body, from the top of the head to the base of the spine. Each chakra relates to different core aspects of our nature—such as empathy, discernment, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning.
You know more about this system than you may think. Think of a time when you felt your gut churning with upset, or a surge of affection in your chest. You can likely relate to feeling your throat tighten when worried about speaking up in a group. Many people also describe feeling pressure in their forehead when concentrating deeply or trying to solve a difficult problem. These experiences are linked in various ways to the chakra system. In other words, we are experiencing aspects of this system every day, whether we recognize it or not.
While there is a wide range of writing about chakras, Ellen Tadd's work is distinct. Her discoveries did not emerge from tradition or pre-existing theory, but from decades of careful observation of children and adults in real-life settings. As she sought to understand why some individuals and groups thrived while others struggled, she found that the chakra system provided a useful framework for understanding and supporting human development.
The Framework: Seven Core Developmental Areas
Tadd organized her findings about the human energy system into seven essential developmental areas: Inspiration, Focus, Self-Esteem, Good Intentions, Emotional Well-Being, Persona in the World, and Discipline. Each area encompasses a range of strengths and challenges; the names simply reflect the primary emphasis.
She further discovered specific attitudes, actions, strategies, and environments that help individuals and groups cultivate and express their potential in each area. This will look different from person to person. For example, one student may be passionate about tinkering, another about music.
In Creative Lives' training programs, educators develop strengths in each category through age-appropriate tools, reflective practices, and intentional learning environments—first for themselves and then with their students. You do not need prior knowledge of the chakra system to use this approach.
In our experience with thousands of youth and adults, supporting healthy functioning across each area of Tadd's Framework supports optimal learning and well-being.

"Through my own examination of the chakra system and forty years of working with students and clients of all ages, I have observed a structure that can help us simplify our understanding of the course of human development —and aid us in creating an educational strategy that supports and endorses the maturation of the whole child.”

“If we can help children know who they deeply are, understand their interconnectedness with others and the natural world, and with that knowledge, build a creative, fulfilling life — well, that would be gob-smacking wonderful. In my mind, there is nothing more important than this.”
